Wat is het Europese belang om als EU een rol te willen blijven spelen in de Indo-Pacific regio? Volgens HCSS senior strategisch analist Paul van Hooft kan de EU instaan voor stabiliteit en internationale orde. ‘Als we dat overlaten aan de VS en China, dan escaleert dat sneller. En te weinig staten in de regio kunnen een van beide afremmen,’ zegt hij in podcast De Strateeg op BNR Nieuwsradio, in gesprek met Friso Dubbelboer en Paul van Liempt.
‘Als je vliegtuigen in Polen laat opstijgen, geef je Rusland het beste argument om de oorlog te verklaren,’ benadrukt Rob de Wijk in gesprek met Ruben Brekelmans. Het VVD Kamerlid vindt dat een mogelijke inzet vanaf Poolse bases niet uitgesloten mag worden, zegt hij in BNR podcast Boekestijn en De Wijk.

‘De zorgen over hoe China zijn economische macht inzet, zijn zeer terecht,’ zegt HCSS China- en Oost-Azië specialist Friso Stevens in een interview met het Nederlands Dagblad. ‘China maakt anderen graag economisch van zich afhankelijk.’
Het strategische denken in Europa is niet indrukwekkend, schrijft Rob de Wijk in zijn column voor Trouw. De strategie bestaat voornamelijk uit de bereidheid te leveren wat Zelensky wil. Maar dat is geen strategie. Biden stuurt aan op een vredesakkoord en wil escalatie naar een oorlog met Rusland die tot een nucleair armageddon leidt, ten koste van alles vermijden. Vandaar geen F-16’s van die kant. Europeanen schijnen daar niet mee te zitten, ook al raakt escalatie van het conflict hen direct en Amerika niet.

De kans op een oorlog tussen China en de VS is behoorlijk groot. “De VS en China bereiden zich al decennialang, en tegenwoordig met een steeds hogere snelheid, voor op een oorlog met elkaar,” zegt HCSS analist Paul van Hooft bij BNR. “Biden gaat veel verder dan de botte economische oorlogsvoering van Trump.”
