The Indo-Pacific has emerged as the new epicentre of geopolitical competition, but it remains unclear what specific role Europeans should play in the region. For that reason, the HCSS “Europe in the Indo-Pacific Hub (EIPH)” facilitates exchanges, establishing an international knowledge network of experts, practitioners, business representatives and journalists across Europe, South, East, and Southeast Asia, as well as East-Africa, the Middle East, and the US, to discuss the future of the maritime commons in the Indo-Pacific. De operatie in Koersk is vooral een stunt. Die stunt wekt bewondering, maar de strategische impact is klein, schrijft Rob de Wijk in zijn column voor Trouw. Poetin laat zich niet provoceren en blijft stug doorgaan met zijn opmars in de Donbas. Op dat punt lijkt Koersk een Oekraïense misrekening. Zelensky moet nu schaarse troepen inzetten om het veroverde Russische gebied bezet te behouden. Die troepen kunnen niet elders voor de verdediging van het eigen land worden ingezet.

In Memoriam – Yar Batoh

With immense sadness HCSS has learned of the passing of our dear friend and colleague Yar Batoh. Yar was a Research Fellow in our amazing HCSS Team Ukraine (HTU) from 2019 until March 2022, and managed the team since 2020. After Russia’s full-scale invasion of his home country in February 2022, he felt the call of duty and joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Yar was tragically killed in combat in Donetsk Oblast. He will not be forgotten. Thank you for everything, Yar.
