Hoe leg je uit dat je de aarde moet slopen om het klimaat te redden, vraagt Rob de Wijk zich af in zijn column voor Trouw. Om onafhankelijker te worden van landen als China en Rusland op het gebied van grondstoffen, moeten we in Europa de – extreem vervuilende – winning van zeldzame aardmetalen zelf gaan doen. Maar als de stikstofproblematiek en het plaatsen van zonneparken en windmolens iets duidelijk maken, dan is het wel dat mondige burgers niet zonder meer met groene plannen meegaan, en het valt niet te verwachten dat de mensen staan te juichen bij mijnbouw in hun achtertuin.

Op woensdag 22 maart bracht de Minister van Defensie Kajsa Ollongren een bezoek aan het Den Haag Centrum voor Strategische Studies (HCSS), waar zij diverse briefings bijwoonde van onze strategisch analisten over HCSS onderzoek en analyse. Ze werd welkom geheten door HCSS-oprichter Rob de Wijk, gevolgd door een korte introductie met directeur politieke zaken Han ten Broeke en onderzoeksdirecteur Tim Sweijs.

HCSS Datalab paper| Disentangling causality: assumptions in causal discovery and inference

Causality has been a burgeoning field, but for researchers it has been difficult to discern the assumptions they have to abide by in order to glean sound conclusions from causal concepts or methods. In an article published in the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Review, HCSS data scientists Maarten Vonk and Nino Malekovic, together with Thomas Bäck and Anna Kononova of the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS), aim to disambiguate the different causal concepts that have emerged in causal inference and causal discovery from observational data by attributing them to different levels of Pearl’s Causal Hierarchy.

In a new article in Contemporary Security Policy (CSP), Tim Sweijs and Samuel Zilincik try to reconceptualize denial and rethink its emotional effects. The authors argue that the expansion of military domains and the renewed emphasis on multi-domain coercion requires us to reconsider the utility of denial strategies with a pair of fresh eyes.
