Rusland maar ook China zijn actief in de regio en hebben economische belangen en investeringen. ‘Maar de Russen en Chinezen zullen heel snel teleurstellen’, zegt Han ten Broeke, directeur Politieke Zaken bij het Den Haag Centrum voor Strategische Studies, in podcast Boekestijn & De Wijk. ‘Daar, in dat gat, moeten wij, het Westen, overtuigend springen.’
De F-16-trainingen voor Oekraïense militairen, die vanaf augustus op Europese bodem zouden beginnen, lopen niet zoals gepland. She compares the EU’s energy supply security policies on gas with the similar absence of a strategic vision on the supply security for critical raw materials.
This week, HCSS deputy director Michel Rademaker met with President Tsai Ing-wen at the Ketagalan Forum – 2023 Indo-Pacific Security Dialogue in Taiwan. Rademaker spoke about the need to diversify supply chains, stressing that a healthy ecosystem cannot be built by only one country or one region; it is necessary to cooperate with like-minded partner countries.

Patrick Bolder hoort de vragen vaak om zich heen. „Geen gevechten meer, dat is een nobel streven. Maar als Oekraïne deze strijd niet wint, is ook onze vrijheid in gevaar,” schrijft Bolder in een opinieartikel voor De Telegraaf.
Artillery was, and looks to remain, important for land warfare, HCSS strategic analysts Davis Ellison and Paul van Hooft tell Newsweek. According to Kyiv’s military, Russian forces have lost more than 5,000 artillery systems in the almost 18-month-long war, as the Ukrainian counteroffensive eats up artillery supplies on both sides. “Having to restrain itself to not run out of munitions might turn out to be a real problem.”
