Where will Europe have to defend itself? What are the threats to Europe’s security, beyond the immediate future? In their latest Think Tank Report, the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung presents a selection of recent studies by leading think tanks, including the HCSS report “Wars to come, Europeans to act,” the largest survey of European defence experts since the beginning of the Russian invasion.
Like the many other Western weapons provided thus far, the F-16 is unlikely to be a magic bullet. “By themselves, I wouldn’t say they’re game-changing,” HCSS director of research Tim Sweijs commented on CNN. “To be able to employ the F-16 effectively, Ukraine would have to achieve some degree of air superiority,” HCSS defence expert Peter Wijninga added.

Gaan de tanks voor Oekraïne écht het verschil maken? HCSS analist Frederick Mertens legt het uit bij NU.nl: “De tanks die nu worden gestuurd vormen een eerste stap. Hierdoor kan het Oekraïense leger leren omgaan met het systeem.”
De levering van moderne tanks aan Oekraïne is belangrijk, maar het zal nog een tijdje duren voor de impact daarvan ook op het terrein te zien zal zijn, zegt HCSS defensie expert Patrick Bolder bij VRT NWS. “Niet alleen zijn de tanks zelf er in eerste instantie nog niet, je moet ook zorgen voor de nodige opleiding en voor een aangepaste logistieke keten. Een gamechanger zal dit dus nog niet meteen zijn.”
