New report | Partners and Avenues for European Engagement in Indo-Pacific Maritime Security

Europe depends on the Indo-Pacific for trade, but has limited capacities to secure its interests in the region. This new HCSS report by Benedetta Girardi and Paul van Hooft identifies regional partners with whom Europe should collaborate to deepen its engagement. It first maps the suitability of all Indo-Pacific powers for cooperation before zooming in on a group of countries that are promising as partners but remain somewhat ambivalent towards Europe.

De kleine westerse coalitie die sinds 12 januari aanvallen uitvoert op Houthi-doelen heeft de situatie voor de Nederlandse zeescheepvaart ingrijpend veranderd, zegt  Annet Koster, directeur van de Koninklijke Vereniging van Nederlandse Reders (KVNR), in BNR’s podcast De Strateeg. ‘We konden nog relatief goed doorvaren, maar voor alle scheepvaart met een Nederlandse link is die situatie sindsdien veranderd.’ Zeeroutes zijn daadwerkelijk gevaarlijker geworden, beaamt ook HCSS analist Paul van Hooft. En dat baart zorgen. ‘Veiligheid is typisch iets waar je niet van bewust bent zolang je het hebt.’

Dat het conflict tussen Hamas en Israël tot grote emoties leidt, is logisch. Maar die emoties zijn wel erg eenzijdig, schrijft Rob de Wijk in zijn column voor Trouw. Want de oorlog in Gaza is inmiddels onderdeel geworden van een veel grotere strijd. De morele politiek van de postmoderne westerse wereld maakt ons totaal ongeschikt voor de wereld waarin we leven.
