The Netherlands presents logo for NATO Summit 2025

On 24 and 25 June the Netherlands will be hosting the NATO Summit 2025 at the World Forum The Hague. Today the Netherlands presented the official Summit logo in the World Forum. At the same time as the summit, the NATO Public Forum will be held in The Hague as well, co-organised by HCSS, the Clingendael Institute and the Netherlands Atlantic Association.

This new HCSS report by strategic analyst Davis Ellison concludes that the days of relying on the U.S. as the primary guarantor of European security may be coming to an end. The transatlantic partnership will not disappear overnight, but significant changes are underway. Europe must prepare for a future where it will play a much larger role in its own defence and security affairs.

A senior official of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature, in 2014 he was appointed as special envoy of the Ministry of Agriculture to develop new business opportunities for the private sector. His wide experience with complex trade issues, market access negotiations and food security, will be a valuable contribution to HCSS research on the critical challenges to food security and affordability the world is facing.

De situatie in Oekraïne wordt met de dag nijpender en zal vermoedelijk verder verslechteren nu Trump is herkozen, schrijft Rob de Wijk in zijn column voor Trouw. Inmiddels vechten Russische troepen in Koersk zij aan zij met Noord-Koreanen, waardoor het conflict op zorgwekkende wijze een internationale dimensie krijgt. In de meeste hoofdsteden valt ook te horen dat Zelensky onmogelijk in staat is alle verloren gebieden te heroveren. Er zal op enig moment onderhandeld moeten worden, maar zoals het nu gaat, staat Poetin er dan beter voor.

Geloven we nog in democratie? “Er is steeds meer maatschappelijk ongenoegen in Westerse democratieën. Burgers ervaren dat de democratie niet meer voor hen ‘levert’,” zegt HCSS analist Gerben Bakker. “Rijke lobbygroepen hebben buitensporig veel invloed op de besluitvorming, en het is inherent aan de liberale democratie dat nijpende beslissingen over bijvoorbeeld asielmigratie botsen op de principes van de democratische rechtstaat. Daardoor is democratisch bestuur vaak weinig slagvaardig, en dat zorgt voor frustratie bij burgers.”

HCSS strategisch adviseur Lucia van Geuns benoemd tot lid van de Mijnraad

HCSS strategisch adviseur Lucia van Geuns is per 1 november 2024 officieel benoemd tot lid van de Mijnraad, een onafhankelijk adviesorgaan dat de minister van Klimaat en Groene Groei adviseert over de verlening van verschillende mijnbouwvergunningen. De Mijnraad bestaat uit deskundigen op het gebied van onder andere politiek-bestuurlijke verhoudingen, veiligheid/toezicht, geologie, juridische aspecten en ruimtelijke ordening. Elk jaar brengt de Mijnraad verschillende adviezen uit over het opsporen of winnen van delfstoffen of aardwarmte, en het opslaan van stoffen in de diepe ondergrond.

HCSS is proud to see our Taiwan crisis scenarios cited in the long-awaited report by Sauli Niinistö, “Safer Together: Strengthening Europe’s Civilian and Military Preparedness and Readiness”, commissioned by the President of the European Commission. In March 2024, HCSS published “The Cost of Conflict: Economic implications of a Taiwan military crisis for the Netherlands and the EU”, in which we set out the likely and possible consequences for critical sectors (e.g., the medical and defence industry) and the broader economy of the Netherlands and the EU, if China applies military power to change the status quo in its relations with Taiwan.
