The Hague Mayor Mr. Jan van Zanen visits HCSS

July 11, 2023

HCSS was honoured to receive the Mayor of The Hague, Mr. Jan van Zanen, for a working visit yesterday. After a warm welcome and introductory meeting with HCSS deputy director Michel Rademaker, director of research Tim Sweijs and director of political affairs Han ten Broeke, the Mayor attended several briefings from our strategic analysts on the latest HCSS research in the field of geopolitics and international security.

In the HCSS Datalab, strategic analyst Laura Jasper provided the first look at the Strategic Monitor that HCSS is developing for the Dutch National Police. This programme aims to provide an ‘outside-in’ and future-oriented view and interpretation of relevant trends and developments to support the strategy creation process of the Dutch police. Analysts Irina Patrahau and Benedetta Girardi subsequently presented an in depth look at HCSS research on critical materials and strategic technologies.

Senior strategic analyst Laura Birkman then gave a presentation on climate change and its implications for security. Birkman introduced the HCSS Climate and Security Programme (CASP), which seeks to bridge the gap between researchers, policymakers and practitioners working on climate-related security challenges in Europe and around the world.

Concluding the programme were strategic analysts Davis Ellison and Frederik Mertens, who briefed the Mayor on the latest insights on cyber security and the continuing war in Ukraine.
