The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies (HCSS) is pleased to present the latest report "Innovation in a Warming World". The study looks at how research can help tackling future climate change challenges. It also includes a GeoRisQ Monitor which ranks countries on the basis of their vulnerability to climate change. This report is part of the Grand Challenges project, in which HCSS identifies areas for research and development which can help address the most pressing societal challenges for Europe.

Personalization in health care is an emerging approach that could greatly benefit the financial sustainability of health-care systems and improve health outcomes. Reflected in more ‘customized’ care, personalization could help in providing more effective, efficient and appropriate care to the emergence of new disease patterns and the growing prevalence of certain chronic illnesses (e.g., cancers, obesity), caused by trends like aging and unhealthy behavior.

Organized crime for the European market is a multi-billion dollar business that feeds on, as well as sustains, poverty and poor governmental control. As factors like the economic crisis and the emergence and growth of urban slums will sustain organized crime, this threat is likely to stay with us in the foreseeable future. Against this background, the HCSS report Detecting Elusive Criminals answers the following question: what research strands need to be explored further in order to find solutions for the threat posed to Europe by transnational organized crime?
