Jesse Kommandeur is a trained Data Scientist and Datalab Manager at HCSS, with a research portfolio focusing on the interplay between technology, society, and policy. Building products on the intersection of geopolitics and AI, he leads a team where domain experts and technical specialists sharpen each other’s work, turning untested intuition into something that can be probed, quantified, and either confirmed or overturned.
At the HCSS Datalab, Jesse drives the design and rollout of open-source tools and dashboards that fold NLP and generative AI into strategic analysis across the defence, security, and geopolitics domains. He brings extensive experience building secure, end-to-end data solutions, from horizon-scanning pipelines to generative models that track or simulate how states behave over time.
He holds two BSc degrees, in Business Administration and Information Sciences, and an MSc in Data Science (cum laude) from the University of Amsterdam. Prior to joining HCSS, Jesse led data-driven research projects for stakeholders including the Port of Rotterdam and the Dutch Police Academy. He also spent over three years at the University of Amsterdam, where he lectured and guided research projects at the Institute of Informatics.
