Why the Dutch Ukraine referendum is a joke

Last week several of the people behind the Dutch Ukraine referendum were interviewed by NRC Handelsblad, a Dutch daily. In the interview they stated that they “could not care less about Ukraine”. The real motivation for the referendum is to create momentum for the Netherlands to one day leave the EU altogether. Of course this did not came as a shock.

But still, from an organisation that has ‘saved democracy!’ as its motto it is appalling how they not only lied to the whole nation, but are willing to thwart the future of 45 million Ukrainians in the process. Knowing that the organisers of the referendum thus willingly lied about their intentions and are not the least bit interested in Ukraine, the referendum as such is not about Ukraine at all. That also means that the organisers should have no interest whatsoever in whether the agreement with Ukraine is ratified – after all, they said so themselves that they do not care. If I were the Dutch government, I would therefore give them exactly what they ask for and ignore the results of the referendum altogether, writes Sijbren de Jong in his column for EUobserver.

Moscow reacts to US troops in Eastern Europe

Russia has emerged as a necessary partner for Washington and the West on sensitive issues affecting international security such as Syria, or the Iran nuclear deal. And from time to time it seems Berlin and Paris are also open to a rapprochement with Moscow. However, the West will have to walk a tightrope. The price we will pay for striking a bargain with Moscow on Ukraine for example is high says Sijbren de Jong to Slovak Pravda newspaper.

Gazprom not talking price with EU buyers

Russian state-owned gas company Gazprom is not holding any talks on adjusting gas prices for its European consumers, a company executive has said, as the low oil price shifts pressure from rates to flexibility in long-term contracts.

That said, the low price has not ended Gazprom’s disputes with the European Commission and consumers in the EU.

An investigation is ongoing into Gazprom’s practices in various Central and Eastern European markets, and buyers are still pushing for more flexibility in contracts with take-or-pay clauses.

Belarus is an exception in that it is still pushing for a new contract price. “Minsk knows Moscow can’t bail them out when needed as Russia has its own problems. So it is playing its old game of pleasing both sides, hoping that Gazprom will come out with a nice price for the gas,” Sijbren de Jong said to Interfax Global Energy.

German-Russian gas pact undermines the EU Energy Union

The planned Nord Stream II gas pipeline between Russia and Germany risks upsetting the foundations of the Energy Union, given that the pipeline increases dependence on Russian gas supplies at a time when the European Commission is keen to do the exact opposite. The key to blocking the initiative may lie with the European Commissioner for Competition, Margrethe Vestager says Sijbren de Jong to Danish weekly magazine ‘Monday Morning’.

Celebrating 9 years of HCSS

Transnational Terrorism, Security & the Rule of Law, European Defense & Equipment Market, Secure Haven, Embedded Journalism, Risk Analyses in Africa, New Horizons (future NATO-strategy), Wargames concerning Joint Operations 2030 and Disruptive Technologies: just a random selection of the projects HCSS did in its first year. Projects that bring prestige, have an impact, and stir the imagination. Complex projects that require expertise and offer the opportunity to experiment with innovative methodologies, these helped put HCSS on the map. Projects that we would still be proud to take on nine years into our existence.

Does that mean nothing has changed? Yes and no. Yes, we are still engaged with issues at the intersection of geopolitics and security, but in the past few years, geo-economics has taken a more prominent place in our portfolio. Natural resources, energy, and agro-food have become new areas of expertise within HCSS. The Centre of Expertise on Resources that was founded last year is only the most visible example. Combined with water and climate issues, this domain offers broader, more holistic insights that bring value to our customers. In the area of cyber, we have built up an international reputation. This adds to our ability to analyze events and to lift public debates and political discussion to a higher level. Additionally, the way in which our quantitative methodologies produce new insights on various issues is hugely appreciated and respected. This is reflected in the number of followers that we enjoy on social media platforms, in growing name recognition, and in the fact that among the 1800 think tanks that we have in Europe, we occupy the 11th spot in the area of energy and natural resources, the 28th spot in defense and security, and that we are 44th in the area of international policy-making. However, innovative methodologies are only meaningful if they are matched with sharp and informed analyses, as well as clients who are prepared to look beyond today’s headlines and peer into the future. The shape of issues to come is gaining visibility. We look forward to serve you as well in the next nine years, and to contribute to making the world a little bit safer.
