Ruzzia Unmasked | Rob de Wijk: Russia’s distorted view of the world order and policy of containment

January 3, 2023

“The modern world has no place for the old fashioned idea of buffer zones,” Rob de Wijk analyses in the latest episode of Ruzzia Unmasked.

“Ruzzia Unmasked” project is a joint initiative of the Lithuanian and Polish Ministries’ of Foreign Affairs, aiming to explore the ideology behind the Russian state and to answer many of the deeper questions surrounding the war in Ukraine, together with the help of contemporary thinkers and experts.

The modern world has no place for the old fashioned idea of buffer zones – diagnoses professor @RobDeWijk from @hcssnl in the latest #RuZZiaUnmasked series.

The project looks to answer questions such as: Is there an explanation for the current developments in Russia? Are Russian actions in Ukraine explained by Russian imperialism? What is Russia trying to achieve? How has Putin come to power? Has Russia become a fascist state? What should the global community do?

In this episode, Rob de Wijk,  Director of the Hague Centre for Strategic Studies and Professor of International Relations at Leiden University, looks into Russia’s motivations based on a warped view of history and into the use of outdated international relations theories such as the “buffer zones.”
