The new Strategic Concept: Tim Sweijs to speak on NATO’s future course

April 28, 2022

HCSS Director of Research Tim Sweijs will speak at a debate on NATO’s future course, hosted by the Brussels Office of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs – Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP), on  Tuesday, 3 May 2022.

Even as NATO addresses short- and medium-term challenges posed by Russia’s war on Ukraine and additional challenges to North Atlantic security, Alliance leaders are due to unveil a new Strategic Concept guiding NATO’s longer-term plans at their June summit in Madrid. How should NATO restructure itself for the future? How may the war in Ukraine change Alliance considerations? Will the United States remain fully engaged? What new burdens may await European allies?

A new report, authored by experts from eight different North American and European think tanks, addresses these questions and issues recommendations. Members of this task force will join the discussion.

Speakers:

  • Claudia Major, Head of International Security Division, SWP, Berlin
  • Daniel S. Hamilton, Senior Fellow, Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies Foreign Policy Institute, Washington D.C.
  • Tim Sweijs, Director of Research, The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies and Senior Fellow, War Studies Research Centre, the Netherlands Defence Academy

Chair:

Dušan Reljić, Head of Office, SWP, Brussels
