HCSS Summer Watchlist

July 23, 2021

Whether you’re lying on a Mediterranean beach, enjoying a cold one on a terrace, or hoping for the rain to stop (it is July after all), the HCSS Summer Watchlist offers you a fine selection of captivating webinars, from European security to SSR, and from space to China:

New Threats, New Responsibilities:

Europe and its Security

On the eve of the French presidency of the EU, French Defense Minister Florence Parly was interviewed by HCSS Director of Political Affairs Han ten Broeke about the future of Europe’s security. How should Europe position itself in view of new challenges arising in its immediate environment?

HCSS analysts Louk Faesen, Paul van Hooft and Patrick Bolder prepared pitches on the topics of Transatlantic relations, cyberwarfare, space and European maritime strategy.

Dutch and European relations with China and Russia in an era of “extreme competition

In an era of “extreme competition”, Europe remains dependent on Russia and China in key strategic areas. What are the geopolitical and geo-economic implications of this dependence for the Netherlands and the EU?

To answer this question, HCSS hosted a symposium, with video pitches by strategic analysts Irina Patrahau, Louk Faesen, Paul Verhagen and Rob de Wijk. The Economist’s Beijing Bureau Chief, David Rennie, was interviewed by Joris Teer on whether European business has a future in Xi Jinping’s China.

Security Sector Reform as a Strategic Policy Tool: Why business as usual isn’t good enough

Is security sector reform (SSR) in fragile states a double-edged sword or can it contribute to conflict prevention and long term stability? Strategic analyst Dorith Kool gave a presentation on a framework to assess security sector’s potential contribution to stability, during the webinar on Security Sector Reform, organized by the Dutch Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs, and supported by HCSS and the KVBK.
