In the coming decades, the world will need increasing amounts of resources. Population growth, resource-intensive lifestyles and the damaging effects of climate change will lead to water, energy and food insecurity across the globe. The challenges of providing sufficient and affordable resources in a socially inclusive way are interconnected. For example, the production of food consumes large amounts of water, a scarce resource in many regions around the globe. Producing more water for agriculture, in turn, requires large amounts of energy (e.g. wastewater treatment plants, desalination plants, pumping and transport of water).
The United Arab Emirates, Jordan and the Netherlands will jointly organise a High-Level Summit on water, energy and food security during the Expo 2020 in Dubai. The Summit will combine policy-making with practical solutions for water, energy and food challenges. It will bring a positive message that an optimal use of water, energy and food resources is a decisive step in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies have developed a serious game to address challenges of water, energy and food (WEF) scarcity. The WEF serious game is a gamified analysis tool, aiming to determine the most relevant capabilities that are needed to secure water, energy and food supplies in following decades, from the perspective of young people.
The results of the game will be translated into practical recommendations for Government leaders at the WEF Summit at the Dubai Expo in January 2022. One participant from respectively UAE, Jordan and the Netherlands will be selected to present the results at the Summit in Dubai.
