This new report developed under the IRENA Collaborative Framework on the Geopolitics of Energy Transformation, provides new analysis to elicit informed and constructive dialogue on the evolving nature of energy security in the era of renewables.
HCSS strategic analyst Irina Patrahau, an expert on the geopolitics and geo-economics of energy and critical materials, participated in the review process, where she contributed some thoughts on critical minerals supply chain security.
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) report “Geopolitics of the Energy Transformation: Energy Security” can be downloaded here (PDF).
The authors call for the development of a new concept of energy security that takes into account an increasingly electrified, digitalised and decentralised energy system.
This new multidimensional approach to energy should include (among others):
– Secure mineral and technological supply chains
– Infrastructure resilience to security threats and climate impacts
– Human and ecosystem security
– Demand response and flexibility
