We are proud to announce that Erik Akerboom has joined the Advisory Board of HCSS!
With more than four decades of executive, strategic and operational experience in national security, intelligence, defence, crisis management and public administration, throughout his career, Drs. Akerboom has held several of the most senior leadership positions within the Dutch security sector.
From 2020 to 2026, he served as Director-General of the Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD). In this role, he was responsible for the organisation’s strategic direction, operational leadership and the strengthening of the Netherlands’ intelligence capabilities, including the accelerated implementation of advanced technologies.
Previously, he served as Chief of the National Police, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Defence, and National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security (NCTV). He also held a range of senior leadership positions within both the National Police and the AIVD.
His broad experience at the intersection of policy, national security, intelligence and international cooperation, strengthens HCSS’s strategic reflection on security challenges in an increasingly complex geopolitical and technological environment.
Our Advisory Board consists of highly experienced professionals who contribute their expertise and insights to help shape HCSS’s strategic direction and reflect on the future of think tanks. Advisory Board members serve on a voluntary basis. The members of our Advisory Board are not HCSS-affiliated experts. We are therefore not able to assist with media or contact requests.
