Expert Symposium: NATO Warfighting Capstone Concept

June 29, 2020

On June 30th, The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies and the Netherlands Defence Academy in close collaboration with Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (SACT) host a closed, high level expert symposium on NATO’s first Warfighting Capstone Concept (NWCC). The symposium will be moderated by Dr. Tim Sweijs (Director of Research, HCSS) and Prof. Dr. Frans Osinga (Chair in War Studies, Faculty of Military Sciences, Netherlands Defence Academy).

The SACT will present this first Warfighting Capstone Concept ever to Allies’ Chiefs of Defence in late 2020. The team responsible for drafting the NWCC seeks input from experts on both sides of the Atlantic, to get critical feedback and to gain new perspectives about the future of warfare and future military capabilities. This will help SACT finalize the future iteration of this document in the fourth quarter of this year.

The Future of War and Warfighting

During the expert symposium, the NWCC team will present the core outline of the Capstone Concept, followed by short presentations and discussions between a group of world class experts on future war and future war capabilities.

The meeting will include presentations about the evolution of warfare over the next 20 years, and will reflect on political, social, technological, conceptual, and doctrinal developments.
