Vacancy: Senior Strategic Analyst

The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies (HCSS) is a leading think tank that provides strategic support to public and private organizations. Based on our analyses, we formulate practical strategic options and innovative insights into the implications of key (global) developments and their security implications, grounded in a deeper understanding of underlying patterns. Through our activities and products, we aim to contribute to a safe, sustainable, and just society. HCSS is fully independent, operates autonomously, often in multidisciplinary teams, and collaborates with its network of affiliated experts.

In our strategic research, we specifically focus on topics such as international and national security, defence, strategy formulation, social resilience, emerging technologies, climate security, economic security, raw materials, energy transition, cyber policy, organized crime, and the broader geopolitical and geo-economic context. We conduct our research based on deep domain expertise, data-driven models, and innovative analytical methods.

Job Description

We are expanding our team with senior-level analysts (at least 8 years of relevant work experience) who possess demonstrable knowledge and superior analytical skills in the domain of defence. We are looking for analysts who thrive in a dynamic project organization and have a strong interest in research, analysis, and strategic policy advising.

We are particularly seeking a senior analyst with a solid, up-to-date knowledge of relevant developments in international security and defence, including issues related to Dutch and European defence, NATO and Trans-Atlantic relations, the Indo-Pacific region, conventional and nuclear deterrence, arms control, and strategic stability. Candidates must have the ability to develop forward-looking policy solutions based on this knowledge in the context of a rapidly changing security environment.

Candidates should be experienced writers capable of taking responsibility for drafting brief policy notes as well as full-fledged studies. Additionally, they must have excellent presentation and communication skills, suitable for a broad audience and for policymakers, board members, and top-level executives. Candidates must have demonstrable experience in leading projects or programs and project teams.

Candidate Profile

Candidates must meet the following requirements and possess the following competencies:

  • Academic Qualifications – Academic degree (PhD desirable) in relevant fields such as international relations, strategic studies, security studies, war studies.
  • Work Experience – Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience.
  • Research Interest – Interest in policy-relevant research and advice, and publishing in national and international journals.
  • Interpersonal Skills – Ability to work in an international staff environment. Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Analytical and Research Skills – Ability to link conceptual and integrative thinking to applied political-administrative or policy issues; qualitative and quantitative research skills; eagerness to learn and ability to think outside the box; interest in developing and applying modern tools and methods for policy analyses.
  • Networking – Demonstrable ability to network at the level of strategic decision-makers and to build trusted relationships with clients.
  • Work Ethic – Results and quality-oriented; self-motivated and able to work both independently and in teams; strong sense of integrity and responsibility; flexible.
  • Leadership – Experience in leading multidisciplinary projects and teams.
  • Language Skills – Fluency (native level) in Dutch and/or English is required.
