The recent initiative by China to create a new development bank, known as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, has elicited a lot of discussion about its repercussions for the global balance of power. Whilst seen as undermining American influence in the Asia-Pacific region, the Bank is also poised to be a key vehicle in China’s initiative to create a new ‘Silk Road’ that runs from China through Central Asia towards the Mediterranean. This would put Turkey once more in a pivotal positon as a conduit for shipping goods and resources to Europe.
