Tim Sweijs | NATO Defense College: Generals, Flag Officers and Ambassadors’ Course

June 28, 2024

On June 19, HCSS Director of Research Tim Sweijs gave a presentation on multi-domain operations (MDO) at the Generals, Flag Officers and Ambassadors’ Course (GFOAC) 2024-1, held at NATO Defense College in Rome from 17 to 21 June 2024.

Over the course of an intensive 5-day programme, 65 high-ranking military and civilian personnel from NATO countries and partner nations delved into the complex challenges the Alliance is currently facing, 75 years after its creation, as well as the challenges that lie ahead.

The course’s theme, “NATO at 75 and the Changing Security Landscape,” underscored the importance of looking ahead and fostering strategic foresight. Participants delved into current and emerging threats facing the Alliance with lectures and panel discussions on the role of innovative technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), space security, as well as regional security challenges posed by China, Iran, Russia, and in the Western Balkans.

The GFOAC 2024-1 fostered collaboration and human interoperability through insightful and constructive sessions during committee work. Conducted under the Chatham House Rule, these sessions enabled open discourse and exchanges on how NATO can adapt and evolve to remain a relevant force in the ever-changing security environment. This emphasis on collaboration allowed participants to build strong and enduring professional networks, strengthening international cooperation within the Alliance and its partnerships.
