Russen onze kracht tonen

Als antwoord op de toenemende Russische dreiging houdt de NAVO in Noorwegen de grootste oefening sinds het einde van de Koude Oorlog. Tijdens Trident Juncture komen eind deze maand 50.000 militairen in actie. Onder wie 2200 Nederlandse in belangrijke rollen. Het vertrek van het amfibische troepentransportschip Zr. Ms. Johan de Witt uit de marinehaven van Den Helder vormde gisteren het officiële startsein van de Nederlandse bijdrage.

Ons land kreeg vorige week al een idee van hoe groot Trident Juncture wordt toen duizend Britse deelnemers in Hoek van Holland aan land kwamen. In lange colonnes trokken de vijfhonderd voertuigen van de zogeheten Black Rats over de A12.

De Telegraaf sprak met onder andere Tim Sweijs en Peter Wijninga. Sweijs: “Vorig jaar was het duidelijk dat de NAVO-lidstaten niet in staat waren snel een grote strijdmacht op de been te brengen. Daarom is men als een gek aan de slag gegaan om ervoor te zorgen dat de ultrasnelle reactiemacht die in 2014 werd opgericht daadwerkelijk snel operationeel kan zijn. Trident Juncture moet je zien als de finale test die moet uitwijzen of die inspanningen succesvol zijn geweest.”
