Rewatch | HCSS analysts on liberal democracies, tensions in the Indo-Pacific and supply of critical minerals

June 21, 2024

Our team of strategic analysts is dedicated to providing expert insights, not only in the media, but also at various conferences, events, symposia, panel discussions and seminars that address some of the most pressing geopolitical challenges of our time.

Rewatch a few of the highlights of the past weeks here, featuring HCSS analysts Laura Jasper, Benedetta Girardi and Irina Patrahau, as they delve into a broad spectrum of pressing topics, including the future of liberal democracies amidst a changing world order, the escalating tensions in the Indo-Pacific and Europe’s role in the region, and the security of supply for critical minerals crucial to the green energy transition.

De Balie | Benedetta Girardi: Geopolitical tensions in the South China Sea

Of all the world’s conflict zones, the Indo-Pacific is overlooked. The risks of escalation are real. With China involved, there is a lot at stake. HCSS strategic analyst – and expert on the Indo-Pacific – Benedetta Girardi participated in a debate at De Balie, where she discussed the rising tensions and the role that Europe should play in the region. Is Europe playing its role accordingly? What motivates the actions of China and the U.S.? And what about the 5.9 billion people living in the Indo-Pacific, do they get a say in this geopolitical game of chess?

European Sustainable Energy Week | Irina Patrahau on supply chains for critical minerals

HCSS strategic analyst Irina Patrahau participated in a panel during the European Sustainable Energy Week in Brussels, where she spoke on the importance of critical minerals for the clean energy transition. In her contribution, she focused on geopolitical issues and the challenges that industry faces to secure complex and opaque supply chains. “There is a gap between the supply of minerals and final consumers in Europe, as the midstream is often too complex for single companies to map, understand and manage supply chains risks,” Patrahau stated.
