A Road to Riches or a Road to Ruin? The Geo-economic Implications of China’s New Silk Road
Given the unprecedented scale of China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative, this study investigates the extent to which ‘Belt and Road’ related investments in CEE and the greater Middle East bring sufficient economic weight to both regions that at the same time can be turned into political influence. In addition, the paper seeks to understand whether China’s role can be judged as positive or negative for regional security, as seen from the European and Dutch perspectives.
Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Defense
Artificial intelligence (AI) is on everyone’s minds these days. However, how many of us wonder about what AI means for defense and security? The authors of this study argue that AI may have a far more transformational impact on defense and security whereby new incarnations of ‘armed force’ start doing different things in novel ways, and suggest a premium of AI use for the purpose of prevention and resilience. The study suggests that the advent of artificial super-intelligence (i.e. AI that is superior across the board to human intelligence), presents us with both unprecedented risks and also opportunities that we have to start considering.
