Global Center on Adaptation | State and Trends in Adaptation Report 2022

November 3, 2022

Adaptation at the Core of a Prosperous Africa in an Uncertain and Warming World

The Global Center on Adaptation “State and Trends in Adaptation Report 2022” offers comprehensive recommendations for action, based on new evidence that Africa faces a serious shortfall in funding for climate adaptation, even as costs of delayed action rise.

State and Trends in Adaptation 2022 Report: Africa (Volume 2) expands on the in-depth analyses provided in State and Trends in Adaptation 2021 by widening its scope of sector and thematic areas, regional coverage, and undertaking deep dives at the country level for specific topics.

The State and Trends in Adaptation in Africa Report 2022 (STA22) completes the most comprehensive overview of the present and projected climate risks in Africa and blueprint for adaptation action. The third in the Global Center on Adaptation’s series of annual flagship reports maintains the dedicated focus on Africa and expands the analysis offered in the 2021 report published last year ahead of COP26.

STA22 provides a deeper dive into individual countries, as well as analyzing sectoral and thematic areas. It takes a forensic look at the climate finance instruments available, the means by which resources can be mobilized for mainstreaming climate into public budgets, and how to attract and apply private adaptation finance.

Paired with STA21 published last year, the reports present a comprehensive set of recommendations for action by offering innovative adaptation and resilience ideas, solutions and financing options. As adaptation is scaled up in response to the challenge of climate change, and the commitment made at COP26 to double adaptation finance, the report will be used to inform the design of projects and programs, including those supported by the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program.

HCSS senior strategic analyst Laura Birkman contributed to the report, as co-author of the Security chapter, together with colleagues from the International Military Council on Climate and Security, Chairman Tom Middendorp and Research Fellow Elsa Barron from The Center for Climate and Security, which you can download separately here:

Global Launch Event: GCA State and Trends in Adaptation Report 2022

Leading into the landmark ‘African COP’ at Sharm El-Sheikh, the GCA State and Trends in Adaptation Report 2022 offers a comprehensive set of recommendations for action, based on new evidence that Africa faces a serious and urgent shortfall in funding for climate adaptation, even as the costs of delayed action rise.

Event description:

The GCA State and Trends in Adaptation Report 2022 (STA22) completes the most comprehensive overview of the present and projected climate risks and adaptation solutions in Africa. STA22, the third in GCA’s series of annual flagship reports, maintains the dedicated focus on Africa from 2021 and expands its analysis. The report provides a deep dive into the economics and finance of climate change adaptation, with an additional focus on sectors, cross-sectoral themes and country profiles. It sets out the potential costs and benefits of adaptation interventions in Africa and includes new analysis on the impact of climate change on the private sector.

The global launch of STA22 will be a hybrid press briefing, featuring in-person participation from GCA’s global headquarters in Rotterdam with high-level discussants joining live online, and a livestream broadcast for media and the public.

In the run up to #COP27, the GCA State and Trends in Adaptation Report 2022 #STA22 offers comprehensive recommendations for action, based on new evidence that Africa faces a serious shortfall in funding for climate adaptation, even as the costs of delayed action rise.
