On March 12 SIB (Student association on international affairs) celebrated its 28th birthday: time to look ahead.
During the lecture the future of NATO and the role the Netherlands must start or continue to play in this alliance was discussed. NATO itself is busy coming up with a new Strategic Concept. The NATO Strategic Concept describes the threats that they think that can affect the Alliance- and what action they should take accordinly. The current concept dates from 1999, i.e. prior to the attacks on the WTC in New York and the consequences this has had our view of the world and conflicts.
Speakers during this evening were:
•Mr. Rem Korteweg of the Hague Center for Strategic Studies, where he is actively involved in the Strategic Concept of NATO, and;
•Mr. Arjan Vliegenthart, the SP, which proposes a number of conditions on the survival of the (new) NATO.
