Tim Sweijs speaks at Dutch MFA talkshow launch of the REAIM summit 2023

September 23, 2022

Director of research Tim Sweijs spoke at the Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken Talk (the Dutch MFA) show on the launch of the Responsible Artificial Intelligence in the Military Domain (REAIM 2023) at the UN headquarters.

Tim spoke on the importance of AI as an example of an all-purpose technology that will transform the future of war and the need to regulation through international norms. He posed the question, “could you outline three ways in which the UN can contribute effectively to developing these new norms and involving these key actors?” Tim’s question was then discussed by the panellists, which included Minister Wopke Hoekstra and UN under-secretary for disarmament Izumi Nakamitsu.

You can watch the Talk Show launch here, Tim Sweijs speaks from 12.06 mins.

The Netherlands is taking the initiative to set an agenda on the responsible use of this AI-technology. To this end, the Netherlands is organizing an international summit called REAIM 2023. It will be held on 15 and 16 February 2023 at the World Forum in The Hague. For this occasion, government representatives, academics, industry, think tanks, and civil society from all over the world will come together.

On Wednesday, 21 September, this online talk show was hosted from the United Nations headquarters in New York at 16:00 (CEST) as a kick-off.
