Saoedi-Arabië in de wacht, Hoekstra op hoede

De verdwijning van de Saoedische journalist Jamal Khashoggi na een bezoek aan het Saoedische consulaat in Istanbul houdt de internationale gemoederen sterk bezig. Verschillende landen zijn bezig om hun banden met Saoedi-Arabië te heroverwegen, en menig hooggeplaatste persoon heeft een uitnodiging om het ‘Future Investment Initiative’ in Riyadh (‘Davos in de woestijn’) bij te wonen terzijde geschoven.

Ook de Nederlandse minister van Financiën Wopke Hoekstra was van zins om naar de golfstaat af te reizen. Welke belangen heeft Nederland eigenlijk in Saoedi-Arabië, en kunnen wij het ons veroorloven om niet op te komen dagen?
