The Planetary Security Initiative aims to increase awareness, deepen knowledge, and to develop and promote policies and good practice guidance to help governments, the private sector and international institutions better secure peace and cooperation in times of climate change and global environmental challenges.
The Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched the Planetary Security Initiative (PSI) in 2015. Now operated by a consortium of leading think tanks, the goal of PSI is to strengthen the knowledge-policy interface by consolidating the Community of Practice on planetary security.
HCSS is part of the PSI consortium and has created for this year’s conference the Planetary Security Monitor. This interactive monitor has four layers: conflict and climate change related vulnerabilities, risks associated with moving towards a low carbon economy and economic resilience. The composite indexes, out of which the first combines all the risk layers and the second adds to that the economic resilience, are also included. All layers are based on various indicators and are up to date. The results are visualized on interactive maps which allow drilling down to indicator level as well as bar charts that distinguish between different sub-domains of the layers in question.
The monitor will be officially launched and presented during the Planetary Security Conference in December 2016, together with the accompanying report by HCSS and Clingendael Institute. It is designed to help policy makers in developing targeted and tailored remedies to battle challenges in the broad spectrum of planetary security.
