A Road to Riches or a Road to Ruin? The Geo-economic Implications of China’s New Silk Road

Given the unprecedented scale of China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative, this study investigates the extent to which ‘Belt and Road’ related investments in CEE and the greater Middle East bring sufficient economic weight to both regions that at the same time can be turned into political influence. In addition, the paper seeks to understand whether China’s role can be judged as positive or negative for regional security, as seen from the European and Dutch perspectives.

Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Defense

Artificial intelligence (AI) is on everyone’s minds these days. However, how many of us wonder  about what AI means for defense and security? The authors of this study argue that AI may have a far more transformational impact on defense and security whereby new incarnations of ‘armed force’ start doing different things in novel ways, and suggest a premium of AI use for the purpose of prevention and resilience. The study suggests that the advent of artificial super-intelligence (i.e. AI that is superior across the board to human intelligence), presents us with both unprecedented risks and also opportunities that we have to start considering.

StratMon 2016-2017: Volatility and Friction in the Age of Disintermediation

The 2016 annual report is meant to help Dutch defense and security organizations prepare for challenges that lie ahead, by examining the development of worrisome international trends which have widely-reverberating consequences. The current volatility (Brexit, the failed coup in Turkey, terrorism, a resurgent Russia) is not a coincidence, but rather the result of fundamental disturbances of the global order that are greatly amplified by rapid technological developments.

The Geopolitical Impact of Climate Mitigation Policies

This study employs a number of innovative investigative methods and analytical   approaches to generate insights regarding socio political stability in the wake of the world’s transition to renewable energy systems in a number of major oil- and gas-exporting nations near Europe. On top of this, the report looks closely at the energy landscape in Sub-Saharan Africa and analyzes in detail which choices developing nations face with respect to their future energy mix.

Dutch Investments in ICT and Cybersecurity

Digitalization has taken a predominant role in the Netherlands. The nation considers itself one of the leading information and communications technology (ICT) countries, promotes itself as ‘a safe place to do business’ and aspires to be the digital gateway of Europe. This report aims to estimate the current and prospective size of the Dutch digital economy and the ICT sector, and analyze how much the latter contributes to the national economy.
