What is the future of Dutch military activity in space? HCSS’ Assistant Analyst Liam van de Ven and Strategic Analyst Lt. Col. Patrick Bolder identify the space domain as a crucial factor in retaining Dutch military strategic and tactical value within its alliances in HCSS’ latest publication: “The Closing Window: Dutch Relevance in Space Examined”. In this policy advice paper, they argue that The Royal Netherlands Air Force ought to invest in Responsive Space Capabilities in order to be a valuable ally in the European context, whereby tailor-made nano-satellites would be designed and produced in the Space Valley of Europe. Yet as the window for Dutch strategic and tactical relevance in space is closing due to unprecedented spending by allies and adversaries, the authors find that “Dutch hesitance will lead to Dutch irrelevance”.
