Han ten Broeke bij WNL over 75 jaar Verenigde Naties

De Verenigde Naties bestaat 75 jaar: het ideale moment voor het doorvoeren van broodnodige hervormingen, pleiten meerdere experts. Zo ook directeur Politieke Zaken bij The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies en voormalig Kamerlid Han ten Broeke.

“Er zijn ontzettend veel conflicten in de wereld. Van Somalië tot Sudan, van Myanmar tot Libië. Maar nu ook in bijvoorbeeld Syrië en Jemen. Allemaal conflicten waar de VN niet of nauwelijks invloed op kan uitoefenen, omdat de VN verdeeld is. Dat wordt nog moeilijker op het moment dat de overwinnaars van de Tweede Wereldoorlog hun vetorecht gebruiken in de veiligheidsraad.”

Toch blijft de VN, die zaterdag 75 jaar bestaat, ontzettend belangrijk, zegt Ten Broeke. “Het vervelende is dat er geen alternatief is voor de VN. Als je hem niet zou hebben, zou je hem het liefst vandaag weer willen oprichten. Beter zou zijn om de VN te moderniseren en te verbeteren.” Rosenthal is het met hem eens.
