In the 8th volume of the ‘Energy Security Forum’, a publication issued by NATO’s Energy Security Centre of Excellence, Sijbren de Jong takes an old and much discussed matter, the 2009 Russian-Ukrainian gas dispute, and puts it into new light.
As it comes out, the stress on gas consumers would have been remarkably lighter, if regulators would have had a better overview of the gas reserves and technical parameters in the European grid. Also, of great benefit would have been, if the emergency plans of EU countries would have been better coordinated. All in all, he concludes: „if there is one thing the Russian-Ukrainian crisis has served to demonstrate, it is the security risks of having differing legal and regulatory standards along vital energy transit corridors“.
