Sofia Romansky is a Strategic Analyst at HCSS. Her primary research interests concern the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the social and military domains, issues around narratives and disinformation in online spheres as hybrid threats, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Sofia is also the Project Coordinator for the Global Commission on Responsible AI in the Military Domain (GC REAIM).
In 2022, Sofia conducted research on the military use of information in the first seven months of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. On the topic of AI, Sofia has researched researched norms and confidence building measures around the governance of AI in the military domain, the hardware and software components which enable the application of AI to autonomous systems, the impact of post-2018 generative AI on social stability. As a personal interest, Sofia also explores the importance of epistemic responsibility as an element of discussion around AI.
In the past, Sofia has also researched the green transition in the military as part of the Young Thinkers program of the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS). Sofia has spoken at the 2023 and 2025 NATO Youth Summits as well as at the 2025 NATO ACT Academic Conference. She holds a bachelor (cum laude) in Politics, Psychology, Law, and Economics with a specialisation in Politics and a minor in Communication Science from the University of Amsterdam. Sofia also holds a master’s (cum laude) in International Relations and Diplomacy from Leiden University and Clingendael, where she wrote her thesis on the role of digital humour in Ukrainian responses to Russia’s invasion.
