Matthijs is Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Law and AI, a research affiliate with the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk & Centre for the Future of Intelligence (University of Cambridge).
His work focuses on mapping theories of change for long-term AI governance, different international institutional designs for AI, and the effect of AI on international law. Matthijs received a PhD in Law from the University of Copenhagen, and an MSc in International Relations from the University of Edinburgh. He has previous experience working at The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies and the Dutch Embassy in Beirut, amongst others.
