Meanwhile, Cold War creations such as NATO are struggling to remain relevant. Like national armies, they are increasingly involved in international peacekeeping, rather than national defence.
Last week, Radio Netherlands Worldwide organized a debate in Den Helder on the role of the changing role of the armed forces. Under the guidance of Major-General of the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps (ret.) Frank van Kappen (advisor HCSS and NATO), several high-ranked soldiers and other international experts shared their experiences abroad (Afghanistan, Congo, the Balkans) with (former) Generals from Chili, Guatemala and Indonesia, but also with human rights organizations such as Human rights Watch and Doctors without Borders and with journalists. Christa Meindersma LL.M, programme director Conflict Management at HCSS, gave a key note address on stabilsation and reconstruction.
