On behalf of the Cabinet of the Special Envoy for Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustatius, the Hague Centre of Strategic Studies (HCSS) cordially invites you to an online event about the positioning of the Islands.

This online event will discuss the role of Bonaire, St Eustatius and Saba in the changing geo-economic landscape as well as challenges and opportunities to expand cooperation with key partners in priority areas like connectivity (digital, by air and sea), climate change adaptation and mitigation, food security and economic diversification. It is based on ongoing HCSS research on the topic.

The Islands are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The position of the Islands is important for the Netherlands, the European Union and their allies in several respects. Amongst others:

  • The islands are parts of the Netherlands and the European Union, meaning that their prosperity and wellbeing should be key priorities of these actors, especially considering – but not limited to – challenges brought by connectivity and climate change.
  • The islands can be key actors in light of renewed European interest in collaborating with Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries. The EU is strengthening its ties with LAC in order to promote a rules-based international order, boost trade and investment, and ensure sustainable and inclusive societies. The ties between the EU and the islands can be an essential instrument in this regard.
  • Involvement of the islands in international framework can contribute to the stabilisation of the multilateral order and the achievement of international environmental and economic objectives.
