SCANNING EMERGING ISSUES OF THE FUTURE are a series of briefs produced by the Strategy & Change Program. The briefs in the series identify emerging strategic issues that are relevant for the four themes of S&C: security, technology & innovation, economy & society, and sustainable development.

An emerging garage-based scientific movement that could potentially revolutionize science and society is currently gathering momentum as a vehicle for future scientific innovation. Unlike the pioneers of personal computing in the 70s, members of this new movement do not deal with bytes, command lines and circuit boards, but with a more primal code, that of DNA.
