Jack Thompson awarded the Theodore Roosevelt Association 2020 book prize

September 16, 2020

The Theodore Roosevelt Association is proud to announce this year’s winner of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Book Prize: Dr. John M. Thompson, author of Great Power Rising: Theodore Roosevelt and the Politics of U.S. Foreign Policy (Oxford University Press, 2019). The prize recognizes the year’s most significant published book focused primarily or substantially on Theodore Roosevelt.

Dr. Thompson is a Senior Strategic Analyst at The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies, where he leads a range of projects in the fields of U.S. foreign policy, transatlantic relations, and European security. Before joining the HCSS, he was Head of the Global Security Team at the Center for Security Studies, ETH Zurich and Lecturer at the Clinton Institute, University College Dublin. He holds degrees from the University of Cambridge, the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), and the University of St. Thomas. In addition to Great Power Rising: Theodore Roosevelt and the Politics of U.S. Foreign Policy, he is co-editor of Not Even Past: How the United States Ends Wars (2020), Progressivism in America: Past, Present, and Future (2015), and America’s Transatlantic Turn: Theodore Roosevelt and the “Discovery” of Europe (2012).

This excellent study on TR’s political finesse and his efforts to shape U.S. foreign policy is scholarly, appealing to a wide audience, and a significant contribution to the historiography of Theodore Roosevelt.

The prize will be presented at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C. during the annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association on Saturday, October 24, 2020.
