On June 15, The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies (HCSS) will host U.S. Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Rose Gottemoeller to exchange views with HCSS staff on a variety of topics relating to disarmament and the upcoming NATO summit in Warsaw in July. Under Secretary Gottemoeller is in the Netherlands to attend the 10th Anniversary Meeting of the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism.
The meeting provides an opportunity to discuss issues relating to nonproliferation –which has been a focal point of President Barack Obama’s foreign policy- as well as developments in regard to the situation on Europe’s eastern flank and plans for a new European security architecture. Under Secretary Gottemoeller has extensive experience in these areas, having served as chief negotiator for the new START treaty with Russia, and through her work at the Carnegie Endowment in Moscow, at the National Security Council and at RAND, among others.
HCSS has published multiple studies in the past few years on these issues, including reports on measuring assertiveness, examining information warfare and various studies on nuclear security.
