The European Commission has presented the European Energy Union as an indispensable instrument for the creation of a coherent European energy policy. The proposal includes among other things giving the commission a bigger influence over member states’ energy deals with third countries.
In this publication written for the Swedish Institute for European Policy Studies Sijbren de Jong argues that the proposal is unlikely to overcome fierce sovereignty concerns by key EU Member States. Instead the Commission should stick to its guns and thoroughly enforce competition law.
