On Monday 2 June, HCSS, in cooperation with the Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (SATC) of NATO, organised a roundtable to gather perspectives on the future security environment and identify key drivers of change. The roundtable took place in the context of the Multiple Futures Project.
In April 2008, the Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (SACT) started its Multiple Futures (MF) Project. This project will build an Intellectual Framework identifying relevant Drivers of Change and several plausible Futures. The MF framework will focus thinking and improve understanding of how the world may change so that military-strategic implications can be deduced. These implications will be used to develop the best possible military advice for the Alliance and inform ongoing defence planning processes.
As part of the first phase of the MF Project HCSS, in close co-operation with the MF Core Team, organises a round table discussion on Monday June 2008. The aim of the roundtable was:
- To engage Dutch institutions and experts around in the MF Project and in general broaden ACT’s network and virtual expertise base in the Netherlands.
- To help in providing a first step in the creation of a MF Intellectual Framework to facilitate and support the ongoing strategic dialogue. This first step also shapes the follow-on work within the MF Project, both in terms of content and process
The morning session was dedicated to national perspectives on the Future Security Environment (FSE); the afternoon session, which was held at TNO-the Hague, focuses on identifying key drivers for change and explores the contours of possible FSEs. This is to reflect upon and add to SACT’s framework of drivers and possible futures.
