The EU is the third largest primary energy consumer in the world after China and the US. However, the continent is far from benefiting from its size. Lack of common vision and prevalence of national interests undermine the development of an internal energy market and EU’s voice vis-à-vis supplier countries. In order to speed up the construction of a more cohesive and relevant actor, the EU Commission outlined the project of an energy union – then endorsed by the Council – to make the EU more integrated, more environmentally sustainable, and more resilient to external shocks.
This policy dialogue, organised by the European Policy Centre (EPC), aims at figuring out the analyses and expectations of domestic and external commentators, in order to better identify what specific priorities the EU should focus on in the forthcoming future.
