A Global Resource Nexus: Opportunity, Risk and Conflict in the Global Struggle for Resources

May 24, 2012

Together with the Transatlantic Academy, The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies (HCSS) is organizing the seminar:

A Global Resource Nexus: Opportunity, Risk and Conflict in the Global Struggle for Resources.

Economic growth, demographic trends and changing consumption patterns are putting increasing pressure on the demand for resources, whereas supply, due to a complex mix of factors, has grown much slower. The imbalance between demand and supply has resulted in high prices, volatile markets and increased competition between countries. Actions taken by governments or other actors to mitigate the scarcity of one resource can have consequences for other resources. Failures of governance and of collective action can contribute to resource scarcity. The interconnections between different resources make it imperative to discuss how the Transatlantic community can govern the resource nexus more effectively.

With this seminar, we bring together a selection of international researchers, key experts and decision-makers to discuss how we could cooperate in addressing the challenges and security risks associated with the global struggle for land, food, water, minerals and energy.

This seminar is by invitation only.

For more information please see the attached program, or contact Marjolein de Ridder.
