De Somalische piraten zijn terug

Somalische piraten hielden zich lang koest, maar maandag sloegen ze toch weer toe. Voor het eerst in jaren is in de Golf van Aden een schip gekaapt. Een vergeten probleem treedt weer op de voorgrond.

De Sri Lankaanse olietanker Aris 13 meldde via de radio dat ze achtervolgd werd door twee snelle motorbootjes. Even later was op de radar te zien dat het schip de steven wendde richting een Somalische haven.

De kaping van het schip, die is bevestigd door de piraten aan persbureau Reuters, is de eerste sinds 2012. Door forse inzet van marineschepen uit de hele wereld liep de piraterij in de regio flink terug, zegt Eric Wilms, expert op het gebied van maritieme veiligheid bij het The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies, een denktank voor internationale vraagstukken in Den Haag.
