The always optimistic Mr. Nice guy, Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte went out of his way to present the outcome of the European summit of December 9 as the best possible result. Of course, it was regrettable that Britain had used its veto and thus had blocked a review of the European Treaty, but in the end, the Dutch government whole heartedly supported the proposals of a fiscal union and semi-automatic sanctions for the euro zone. The Netherlands teamed up with Germany and France and Rutte stressed his excellent relations with Chancellor Merkel and president Sarkozy.
