One of the key challenges for cities in the 21st century is to strike a proper balance between security preparedness and the preservation of local livability and economic vitality. This question is particularly pertinent in urban settings such as The Hague where high-level security events regularly take place.
In recent years, The Hague has developed plans to find smart ways to secure its International Zone. And with the Nuclear Security Summit in March 2014, the city hosted the biggest conference with the largest security precautions ever undertaken on Dutch soil.
The upcoming HSD Café will reflect on the development of an International Zone and lessons learned following the Nuclear Security Summit. Looking ahead, how can cities adapt their infrastructure so that security, livability, and economic growth are in balance?
