Han ten Broeke in FD: Europa moet geopolitiek volwassen worden

Het Amerikaanse leger steunde jarenlang Koerdische milities in hun strijd tegen IS, maar nu acht Trump de tijd rijp zijn troepen terug te trekken. Het Financieele Dagblad vroeg Han ten Broeke, Directeur Politieke Zaken bij The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies (HCSS), om commentaar.

Geopolitiek onvolwassen

Ten Broeke vindt dat de Amerikanen zich daarmee onbetrouwbaar tonen tegenover de Koerden. ‘Ze waren al vaker de speelbal tussen de grootmachten’, aldus het oud-Tweede Kamerlid. Maar ook Europa heeft volgens hem boter op het hoofd. ‘We zijn nog altijd niet in staat de veiligheid van onze eigen Europese buitengrenzen te waarborgen. Dat verwijt kun je Europa maken: dat we weigeren geopolitiek volwassen te worden.’ 

In Europa is met ontzetting gereageerd op de Amerikaanse aftocht, maar de kans lijkt klein dat Europa militair in actie zal komen. Volgens Ten Broeke ontbreekt het Europa, anders dan de VS en Turkije, aan handelingsbekwaamheid.
