Mattia Bertolini worked as a Research Fellow at The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies until April, 2023.

His primary research interests included China-EU relations, Taiwan-EU relations, as well as the security and defence of the Indo-Pacific region. Mattia is currently conducting research for HCSS on the geopolitics of critical minerals and technologies, as well as hybrid deterrence strategy remotely from Taiwan.

Prior to joining HCSS, Mattia assumed various academic roles both in teaching and research capacity with a focus on Chinese and Taiwanese politics and foreign policy, as well as International Relations theory in both Europe and East-Asia at Maastricht and Peking University.

Mattia holds an LL.M. (Master of Laws) in Chinese Politics and International Relations at Peking University and holds an honours BA (cum laude) from University College Maastricht. Mattia speaks Dutch (native), Italian (native), English (native), French (limited working proficiency), and Mandarin Chinese (limited working proficiency).
